It’s been super busy in the Wonder Kids office recently, it looks like its going to be a super busy summer of magic shows travelling around all the schools in Gloucestershire and hopefully people take us up on our new sleepover parties too.
I’m loving this project Disney is working on to take all of their animated classics and turn them into live action films. I think it started with Cinderella which was ok, Beauty and the Beast was brilliant, Dumbo was umm ok and when I first saw the initial teaser for the new live action Aladdin I was really worried that it was going to be rubbish, now some new trailers have come out I think it could be alright. It’s a massive loss to not have Robin Williams as the Genie who plays it perfectly in the animated version but then I can’t think of anyone better than Will Smith to have a go at it. The only bit of this trailer I'm not sure about is Jaffar, the guy playing him looks far too nice and good looking for a character so evil.
We have got lots of fun ideas to share with you, so lets kick off with some brilliant Aladdin colouring sheets.
Now try these Aladdin themed activity pages too the. we’ll get on with making our own Fez hats.
Here’s what you’ll need to make these cute little Fez hats.
Red Paper Cup
Make sure that the cups you get are short not tall cups. I have put an Amazon link opposite for the type of cups you need but I think the pricing is bonkers, you should find something better at a local pound shop.
Usually these cups have a white bottom, so I cut a circle out of some red paper to make the bottom red. You could also just use a red marker and just go to town coloring the bottom in too.
I poke a hole with a bamboo skewer through the paper and bottom of the cup right in the center, then pop in your brad fastener. Loop the tassel under the fastener before flipping the cup over and opening the brad tabs to secure.
Finally, cut the elastic cord to about 10″ long, depending on how big the person’s head is of course! Using the same skewer, poke 2 holes on opposite sides near the bottom, loop and tie the elastic through each hole.
This is super simple to make, you’ll need
Gold plastic party bowls
Gold duct tape
Stick on jewels
I have created a little amazon shopping list below with links to save you time.
5 oz clear glue
1/2 cup water
blue food colouring
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp contact solution
In a bowl, pour 5 oz clear glue.
Add 1/2 cup water. Mix until the glue has broken up and is incorporated into the water.
Add a few drops of blue colorant, mixing until you get the perfect Genie blue.
Sprinkle in your glitter. I love glitter! Stir.
Mix 1/2 cup baking soda in. Baking soda will help determine your slime thickness.
Add 1 tbsp of contact solution. Mix. The slime will be ready to knead when the slime pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Contact solution is what makes the slime sticky or not.
Knead the slime. It will be sticky at first. Just keep kneading it! If you have to, you can add a little bit of contact solution, but be careful not to over activate.
Add your charm.
Store in an airtight container.
Here are a couple of great themed recipe ideas to try.
Flying Carpet Pizza
10oz whole wheat pizza dough
1 tablespoon flour, for dusting
Toppings: 1/2 cup low fat monterey jack cheese, shredded
6 figs, sliced
1/4 cup golden raisins
1/4 cup black raisins
1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
Preheat your oven to 400° F
On a cutting board dusted with flour, cut dough into 3 equal pieces and stretch out into rectangles. Shape the corners of each rectangle to form tassels and you’ve got magic carpets!
Place magic carpets on a baking sheet and bake in your preheated oven for 8-12 minutes, or until crispy and slightly brown. Remove the flatbreads and allow to cool.
On each prebaked flatbread spread 3 tablespoons of hummus evenly. Place the black and golden raisins around the outside edges and sliced figs down the middle.
Top with cheese and place back in oven for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Remove, garnish with parsley and enjoy!
Aladdin Cod Bake
2 tbsp yogurt
2 tbsp harissa paste
250g cod fillets
1 red onion, sliced thinly
3 cloves of garlic, crushed
3 peppers, mixed colours, sliced thinly
150g cherry tomatoes, chopped
2 tbsp olive oil
3 bay leaves
Mediterranean mixed grain pouch
Serve with some fresh basil
Mix the yogurt and harissa paste together. Add the fish to the mixture and make sure each piece is fully coated. Leave in the fridge.
Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. In a large roasting dish, toss the peppers, onions and tomatoes in the garlic, oil and bay leaves. Roast for about 15mins – or until the peppers are soft.
Nestle the fish into the roasting vegetables and cook for a further 15 minutes. Add a bit more of the yogurt and harrisa marinade to the fish if you like extra heat.
Microwave the grain pouch for 2 minutes and serve with the fish and vegetables. Garnish with the basil leaves.
How are we doing so far? We have activity and colouring pages, crafts, slime making and great tasting recipes to get us in the Aladdin mood. Now to make this a real Aladdin party you are going to need some Aladdin party invitations which I have designed and included below plus some great games too.
Pin the Wish
A simple home make that would go down a blast, blindfold the kids and see who can pin the with in the bottle.
Musical Magic Carpets
Some cheap rugs or just cushions could work, music (maybe from the film) and plenty of space for the kids to dance.
How to Play
Place "Magic Carpets" in a circle in the middle of the room, you will need one for every player minus one. Have players form a circle around the "Magic Carpets". As music begins players will start to walk clockwise around the "Magic Carpets" when music stops they must quickly find a carpet to sit on! The player who is left without a carpet is then out of the game. Players will then stand and one carpet will be taken away. Music begins again and the players must start walking around the "Magic Carpets" again. Game play will continue with one carpet and one player being out each round until there is only one Princess left!
